ELIGIBILITY

Black students graduating from high schools in Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford (including Washington and Bridgewater), Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield*, are eligible to apply.

Students and their families must be residents of the eligible community at the time such award is made and maintain residency to qualify for subsequent year awards.

Black students whose family resides in an eligible community, but who attend high school outside of such communities are eligible to apply for a Hord Scholarship. (Some special awards may carry restrictions relative to this group).

Black students attending a post-secondary school preparatory program that leads to admission in a degree or certificate program are eligible to apply for a Hord Scholarship.

A student may apply and may be awarded for a Hord Scholarship for up to 4 years of baccalaureate-level study. Previous award recipients are not guaranteed to receive a subsequent award.

*Ridgefield students in the ABCD program are eligible for a Hord Scholarship in their high school senior year only. Special award donors may restrict ABCD student eligibility.

The Hord Foundation, Inc. Award Criteria (Synopsis)

  • acceptance in an undergraduate program or other program of continuing
  • education
  • academic standing
  • contributions to school and community
  • financial need
  • resident of or attended high school in Greater Danbury area
  • personal interview
  • strength of the applicatio

The Selection Committee reserves the privilege to grant or deny an award to any applicant for any and all donor awards based on the rules of the selection process and the criteria established by the donor. The amount of assistance awarded is determined by the Selection Committee for each applicant. If a student attends a college that cost less than the "Estimated Costs" represented on the Confidential Financial Statement, the award may be reduced to reflect the costs at the college the student will actually attend.

Special Awards

All candidates will be screened for consideration for a special award. Candidates being considered for a special award must meet the general Hord Foundation Criteria and the specific criteria of the donor organization. Please review award criteria and check those you believe you qualify for and wish to be considered for.

  • academic excellence

  • dedication to serving others

Cora E. Hord Education Award*

  • pursuing a career in education
  • demonstrated achievement
  • demonstrated academic accomplishment

Jesse and Noel Hord Award*

  • study in human services, social services or education
  • strong academic record
  • previously involved in community services or church activites
