APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications are accepted from students of Black/African/ African American descent who reside in the Greater Danbury area that is serviced by the Foundation beginning in mid-December. Completed applications must be electronically submitted.

Interview for eligible first-time candidates will be communicated at a later date.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility for HORD Foundation – Scholarship Application

Black/African American students graduating from high schools in Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, Washington, Bridgewater, Newtown, Redding, and Ridgefield are eligible to apply.

Students must be a resident of the eligible community at the time such award is made and they and/or their family must maintain residency to qualify for subsequent awards.

A student may apply and may be awarded a Hord Scholarship for only 4 years of undergraduate-level study. Must be a Full-time student (12 minimum credits). Master degree programs are not supported by the foundation

Previous award recipients are not guaranteed to receive a subsequent award.

Meet above eligibility requirements
Completed Application (Including Essay)
Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (On a 4.0 Scale)
Acceptance in an Undergraduate or Continuing Ed Program
Community Service (requested of all applicants)
Personal Interview (Not required for returning recipients)
If you meet the initial requirements you will be expected to do a personal interview. There you will discuss your community service and answer a series of questions.

The Selection Committee reserves the right to grant or deny an award to any applicant for any and all donor awards based on the rules of the selection process and the criteria established by the donor. The Selection Committee determines the amount of the award an applicant will receive. If a student attends a college other than that which was represented on their application, the award may be reduced to reflect the costs at the college the student will actually attend.

Non-Traditional Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to adults who have been out of the school and in the workforce for some years. Adult applicants must be accepted to attend college or post-secondary vocational school for the first time or accepted to re-enter such school to complete a baccalaureate or associate degree program or obtain a non-degreed professional credential from an approved institution.

The Foundation will only accept the following as proof of registration:
A letter from the College or University Registrar’s Office certifying that you have PAID IN FULL, and are ENROLLED in the FALL SEMESTER.

The National Student Clearinghouse – Current Enrollment Verification that reflects ENROLLMENT in the FALL SEMESTER of the College or University.

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates are evaluated by a selection committee of community volunteers based on five criteria;

Academic Achievement (G.P.A. Minimum 2.5 on a 4.0 scale)
Community Involvement
Financial Need
Interview (Character and Integrity)
Completion of Application (Preparation and thought processes for Future Achievement)

The Hord Foundation has awarded close to $5M in scholarships to thousands of area High School students. Students who meet the scholarship eligibility requirements are eligible for awards that range from $1,000 to $5,000 a year for a maximum of four years.
